20mph Zone Extension
We now want to extend it the 20mph Zone in East Malling to cover almost everyone. Your views will be passed to Kent County Council to help them decide whether to approve the extension of the East Malling 20mph zone.
Why Have 20mph zones?
20mph zones are supported by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. They have been shown to cut speed, noise, pollution, crashes and severity of injuries, especially amongst children. There is often also a side effect of reduction in traffic flows, and an increase in cycling and walking. A 20 mph zone contains constant reminders of the limit with signs and road markings, reminding drivers of the 20mph limit. Enforcement is the same as for any other speed limit .. by the Police. Most people are law abiding. When these drivers slow their speed, others behind them must slow theirs too, or risk head on crashes. Exceeding the speed limit by 20mph in a 20mph zone means you will get six penalty points on your licence and a Band C fine of 125 to 175% of your weekly income. You could also be disqualified from driving for between 7 and 58 days
